Winter Projects 2019/20 - pt 4 - Fresh Hardware for Gretchen, Balance Shaft Re-seal, Battery Tray TLC

Hardware refresh, sheet metal accessory painting

Feb 8-12, 2020 - What I really wanted to do was replace all of Gretchen's engine bay hardware with new yellow zinc plated pieces, and have all the sheet metal parts re-plated in the original zinc chromate finish. But, being on a limited budget, that's not exactly what I did.

Winter Projects 2019/20 - Part 3 - Front of Engine cleaning and Throttle Body rebuild

Cleaning the front of the engine

January 1, 2020 - I realize that two consecutive blog posts focused on cleaning a greasy engine is not very interesting to read about, so I'll try to be as brief as possible here. Being tedious, repetitive work, I found I often put myself  "on autopilot" as I cleaned.

Winter Projects 2019/20 - Part 2: Cold Grease.

Dec 28, 2019-Jan 5, 2020. Time to de-grease and clean. It was cold in the garage now, but there was no way I was going to go through all this work and leave grease, dirt and oil behind if I could get to it and clean it.

Winter Projects 2019/20: part 1- Intake removal

December 27, 2019. There was a lot of work to do to get Gretchen ready for spring. I planned on replacing the timing and balance shaft belts, any of the rollers that needed it (determined by bearing feel), the water pump if necessary, the accessory belts, front of engine oil seals, plus anything else that could be taken care of easily, or was necessary for safety, reliability, or driveability.

Preparing for Gretchen's first drive - to the titling office for plates.

Late Nov, 2019. With 33 year-old Gretchen safely tucked away in my garage, it was time to get her ready for the first drive - to the titling office.

Meet Gretchen, the sassy little German mädchen from Neckarsulm and Zuffenhausen!

In November of 2019, after many years of dreaming, planning, and saving, and after two years of actual searching, I located and purchased this Zermatt Silver 1988 Porsche 944S in pretty decent, but not quite perfect shape.
