Test Jigs and Equipment for the 944S, part one.

In order to effectively troubleshoot an issue, you not only have to take a logical and methodical approach, you also have to be able to physically connect test equipment to discover what is and what isn't working. And if you can't do that, correctly finding the fault is made way more difficult that it has to be. So with that in mind, I'd like to show you some of the special test leads, equipment and other tools I've built, adapted, or otherwise found to be useful while troubleshooting and working on Gretchen.

Camshaft Timing Chain Tensioner Service, and More Stripped Threads

One of the first things I did when I bought Gretchen was inspect the timing chain and wear pads on the tensioner. The car's documentation told me the pads were only a few years old, and upon inspection they showed very little wear.

For the most part, the remaining work that was done in 2020 to get Gretchen on the road is pretty standard 944 stuff, like seals, belts & rollers. Since that information is everywhere on the internet, I'll be going through it as briefly as possible, so I can move on to other, more interesting topics, while bringing up a few things you may not have heard about before - icb.

944S damaged door panel repair

The door panels on many pre-plastic-everything era cars are made from what looks like beefed-up egg carton material. The door panels on the 944 fit this description, and unfortunately for us of the Porsche Enthusiast persuasion, this type of door panel material doesn't hold up well under the onslaught of moisture, multiple remove-and- re-install cycles, and car stereo installation weenies.
